Some Insurance carriers are now paying for an annual consult with your pharmacist, no cost to you. Just as you would sit down with your physician, you sit down and speak with your pharmacist for about 20-30 minutes. Appointments are scheduled and questions are answered. Your pharmacist is a wealth of information. Most all have gone to school for six plus years and receive comprehensive training on diet, lifestyle, and medication management. Do you have questions about what supplements to take with your prescription medication, what side effects to look out for, or what is a healthy exercise regimen? Ask your pharmacist and ask if this benefit is included in the benefits you pay for. Use your resources! Knowledge is power. We are here to help you be your healthiest!

Right Down the Middle
Alternative medicine to some is known as hokey. Conventional or modern medicine to some is known as extreme. Integrative medicine combines the best of both alternative and conventional medicine to treat the individual: mind, body, and spirit. As Dr. Andrew Weill, the leading proponent of integrative medicine, states, "If I were hit by a bus, I'd want to be taken immediately to a high-tech emergency room." I totally agree! On the other hand, Dr.Weill supports complementary medicine, alternative medicine that is used alongside conventional medicine. As do I.
Integrative medicine "combines mainstream medical therapies and CAM (complementary alternative medicine) therapies for which there is some high-quality scientific evidence of safety and effectiveness" ,as defined by The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine at the National Institutes of Health.
Lifestyles are unique, complex, and cannot be defined by either alternative or conventional medicine. Integration of the two to come up with a real, lasting, effective solution is the reality for health and wellness. Extremes may be the quick fix, but most often are not the real solution. Alternative therapies may be dangerous and undefined. Finding the middle ground and integrating therapies to treat the individual is the new era of real medicine. We must be open to change. A little bit of this and a little bit of that often works!
My doctor is an integrative medicine physician and I have never been more satisfied with my own wellness. Explore the concept, research integrative medicine, and find a physician that provides you with options. You DO have a choice! I have learned this first hand through both personal and professional experiences. :)
*'Right down the middle' = A strike in baseball and bowling, a great tee-off in golf, a made basket in basketball, a successful field goal in football, and a bulls-eye in archery to name only a few. Looks like the world of sports has it figured out....right down the middle often results in a win...* ;)
As I've fought a sore throat and now cough, I've included a few doses of raw, local honey in my diet. Not only can honey coat the throat, but raw honey provides immune boosting antioxidants and enzymes. Raw honey is also a natural antimicrobial and antiviral. Local raw honey has also helped many people with allergies.
These natural nutrients are stripped when raw honey is processed(not raw). You may also think that honey is just sugar, but raw honey does not even compare to refined sugar. Empty calories deplete the body whereas vitamins and minerals restore the body. Additionally, honey digests itself with all it's live enzymes and spares key nutrients needed for the body's fat metabolism. Therefore honey has been known as a helpful diet aid.
So, explore the benefits of raw honey! The benefits I've listed above are just a few! Prevent and treat....another option for optimal wellness.
"And yet another emerging theory is that our diets are having a biological impact on our anxiety levels: “A diet high in sugar and saturated fat can disrupt brain functioning,” says Fernando Gómez-Pinilla, Ph.D., a professor of neurosurgery and physiological science at UCLA, who researches the effects of diet on mood disorders. “That contributes to mental disorders, particularly anxiety.” *http://www.nbcnews.com/id/39335628/ns/health-mental_health/#.UT4IhxymiAg

Hello Jessica! I am home with a nasty cold today. I have been thinking about leadership as it relates to courage. The world has a lot of assigned leaders. Many feel they have a mandate from the masses because they were elected or appointed by the powers that be. But, real leadership is based on sacrifice. There is a handful of great leaders that have this sacrifice in common. Gandhi, Mandela, Archbishop Romero, Dr. King all gave their lives to help the poor. They were vilified by many in their own countries. They gave everything to everyone else. Their lives have become the cornerstones of the vision of what civilization should be. Their lives also reveal how much courage it takes to change the world. Unfortunately, their stories also reveal how far we have to go. We need to find strength in the stories of great men and women! I was trying to think of one sentence that might sum up how we should be remembered when we spin off this little blue planet. I thought about the courage of Mother Jones (Mary Harris), Medgar Evers and Susan B. Anthony, and this is what I came up with, "We will be remembered by those who knew us by what we did for those who never knew us." That is the great example of courage we have been given. Now it is up to us to live with courage...to live the dream. Peace.

I was raised in a small Iowa town and later attended Simpson College. (A small liberal arts college outside Des Moines, Iowa's state capital). While at Simpson College I met my mentor Dr. William Helfrich. Dr. Helfrich encouraged me dedicate myself to the study of history. I listened. I became a high school teacher and I love it! I have been a teacher for 28 years in schools in Texas and Iowa. I believe that nonviolence offers us the only lasting path to peace. The more I study history, the more I find this to be true.

Eliminate all aluminum from your diet and lifestyle!!!
To name a few!
Avoid cooking with aluminum foil or using as a wrapping for food. Avoid drinking out of aluminum bottles or cans (beer/water).
Aluminum is a heavy metal that leaches into food and settles in the kidneys, brain, and intestines. I won't begin to explain what these three organ systems do for your body and mind.
Aluminum has been associated with Alzheimer's and interferes with the body's ability to absorb calcium and phosphorus, two essential components for almost every body function.
A Quick and Easy Detox: Reduce and Eliminate Aluminum in your Diet/Lifestyle.
There are options!!!! Read labels and educate yourself. Prevention is the treatment.
Your body will love you for it!

"While lifestyle changes can really help bring your cholesterol down, Wong says that not enough people give them a real chance." (Nathan D. Wong, PhD, director of the heart disease prevention program at the University of California, Irving)
"The problem is that both patients and their doctors like immediate results," he tells WebMD. "Lowering your cholesterol with exercise and diet is just not like that."----'High Cholesterol Treatment -- What Works? Safe, effective treatment for high cholesterol isn't hard -- but it can be confusing. Get the facts.' WebMD Feature
Do you ask your doctor about diet and lifestyle changes when a medication is prescribed for you? There are options. Your doctor will discuss the risks and benefits with you. Just ask.
Many need "a pill" and many don't. Look at the big picture, be patient, and see beyond the quick fix. Most indications include diet and lifestyle as treatment options before medication or in conjunction. Cholesterol is just one example.
