Hello Jessica! I am home with a nasty cold today. I have been thinking about leadership as it relates to courage. The world has a lot of assigned leaders. Many feel they have a mandate from the masses because they were elected or appointed by the powers that be. But, real leadership is based on sacrifice. There is a handful of great leaders that have this sacrifice in common. Gandhi, Mandela, Archbishop Romero, Dr. King all gave their lives to help the poor. They were vilified by many in their own countries. They gave everything to everyone else. Their lives have become the cornerstones of the vision of what civilization should be. Their lives also reveal how much courage it takes to change the world. Unfortunately, their stories also reveal how far we have to go. We need to find strength in the stories of great men and women! I was trying to think of one sentence that might sum up how we should be remembered when we spin off this little blue planet. I thought about the courage of Mother Jones (Mary Harris), Medgar Evers and Susan B. Anthony, and this is what I came up with, "We will be remembered by those who knew us by what we did for those who never knew us." That is the great example of courage we have been given. Now it is up to us to live with courage...to live the dream. Peace. ![]() Family **About Kent Alan Mick** I was raised in a small Iowa town and later attended Simpson College. (A small liberal arts college outside Des Moines, Iowa's state capital). While at Simpson College I met my mentor Dr. William Helfrich. Dr. Helfrich encouraged me dedicate myself to the study of history. I listened. I became a high school teacher and I love it! I have been a teacher for 28 years in schools in Texas and Iowa. I believe that nonviolence offers us the only lasting path to peace. The more I study history, the more I find this to be true. _____________________________________________________________
