Today is the three year anniversary of my uncles sudden death and also the reminder that my father would die suddenly very much the same way nine months later. Today gives anxiety for numerous reasons but most of all knowing now that I would have limited time left with my own father. What would I have done? What would I have said? We live our lives thinking we always have time, unlimited time. You certainly do not. Those words left unsaid or those visit you don’t take may never happen. Life isn’t about learning to control but about learning to listen to act on your choice.
Your choices are your own. Choose to make every day better than the last. Choose to pick up the phone and ask you Dad how he is. Choose to know and love your parents NOW. Don’t wait. Waiting is for the overconfident. If I knew from this day, I had just a few months with my father I would live as if I was dying. We all should, everyday, because we all are.
I have no regrets. I cherished my father and soaked up every moment with him. To know or not to know that is the question but if you live your life fully every day, acting on your choice, you will never have to ask. Love your parents. Live for each other NOW. Time is never guaranteed.
